San Francisco artist Terry Hoff introduces a new body of work at the James Wright Gallery in Los Angeles. (Above, Cover for Terry Hoff limited edition catalog).

Terry Hoff’s childhood street, Mariposa, left an undeniable imprint. Terry shares, “I wanted to give a shout-out to my childhood spent in Lodi, California. The cultural influences of my town, the colors, and textures found on the streets, and even inside the homes. I have great memories of that place. Warm afternoons spent playing at the end of our street. We played marbles all day and tried to make them take a spin around the entire circumference of the cul de sac where we lived.”

Terry shared self-realization and reflected, “I am a child of the American west and a maker of images grounded in the counter culture of the western experience.” As each composition reveals itself through stacked layers of color, texture, and rhythm, humanistic forms reveal themselves.

“Sometimes the eyes of shadows peek out,
but mostly when the work settles, its more about celebrating
the human visual experience. Surfaces, images, and shapes
are used to bridge between high and low art, with a
a large dose of latent psychedelia.”

Mariposa features a body of new work by an artist evolving from tight technical properties to a loose abstract form. Bulging shapes and a new order for brightly painted rhythms appear before your eyes.

Terry celebrates contemporary artists Eva Hesse and Lee Bontecou while embracing their proficiencies of “the joy of making” and art as a spirited-dialogue, Mariposa’s inflated, bulbous, rounded forms are reactive narratives of overstimulation.

Terry Hoff’s compositions play off of narratives of overstimulation, digital stresses, and compulsive cultural realities. The paintings in Mariposa are bulbous and irregularly occupy the dimensions of the gallery with objects, unexpected paintings that reach the floor and a central sculptural composition, “The Door.” Terry has realized a collection of playful compositions requesting answers to the question, “What’s it all about anyway?”
