Outsider art is an art form that is driven by an undaunted intensity to create. The artist who practices in this genre does so willingly, and their art is a passionate response to a vision, a soulful awakening, or an epiphanic revelation. There is no formality in training, no art industry praise, or critical speak.
Jean Dubuffet coined the phraseology
Art Brut or “raw art” inspired by his love and appreciation for isolated souls with virtuous imagination who made exceptional art free from societal concerns. Today, the term “Outsider,” is an artist who navigates us through temperamental conflict to pathways of inner peace and intuitive consciousness.

Prolific, and talented Outsider artist, Maggi Hodge is devoted to a newly charged collection of Intuitive paintings exploring relationships between women in today’s world and the chaos of this world. Her new show is titled,
Women, Chaos and X where the
X symbolizes a recurring emblem stretched between convictions of possibility and restraint.
Hodge surveys our divided—politically, emotionally and sexually tumultuous society with bold brushstrokes; rich, dynamic colors; and raw, unfettered gesture. She exudes a powerful grace within each canvas that speaks in compliment to the chaos of society, the beauty of disorder, and the subsequent birth of the concealed creativity deep within.
Photographer,
Laura Hull shares, “Maggi Hodge’s Women, Chaos and X paintings are exhilarating, heartbreaking, challenging, and wild. Hodge’s canvases hold nothing back. They express an ability to fully engage us, never precious, and truly unique.”
You can see
Women, Chaos and X by Maggi Hodge on September 28 thru November 2, 2019, at
Mash Gallery in Los Angeles.
