Pillar Point Harbor California artist Terry Hoff is readying himself for his upcoming exhibition, “Mariposa” at James Wright Gallery in Los Angeles opening on September 21, 2019. Terry lovingly named his exposition after his boyhood street, as we recently caught up.
Mariposa, as Terry shared with me, is an energetically charged place in central California where his dreams to become an artist all began. “The Hispanic-Latino influence was undeniable, the colors, the flavors and even the high-desert tulip sharing its likeness to a butterfly all had a great impact.”
In some way, this exhibition is a shout-out to my past and a welcome call to a more mature me. This exhibition looks to rebel against all of the current trends in some way. And at the same time, pay tribute to my Western roots.”
Terry has been steadily working on evolving his Process art over the past eighteen months working with a variety of different materials that dramatically affect the finish of his painted surfaces. The shape also plays an important role in this new series of work, as Terry pays tribute to contemporary artists Eva Hesse, Lee Bontecou and Elizabeth Murray. (1, 2, and 3 in order below).
Female mavericks who, “…really stand above so much of the great work being produced, and that is out there today.” These great contemporary artists ushered in a new wave of art and style, in reference to Terry Hoff, have mastered the “joy of making” and a refreshing art approach to the very meaning of “play.”
“Mariposa” features inflated, bulbous, rounded forms that play off the narrative of overstimulation. Terri’s self-realization, “I am a child of the American west and a maker of images grounded in the counter culture of the western experience.” As each composition reveals itself through stacked layers of color, texture, and rhythm, humanistic forms are revealed. Peering eyes and facial attributes work their back through the layers of applied pigment in an almost recognizable humanoid form.
“Sometimes the eyes of shadows peek out, but mostly when the work settles its more about celebrating the visual human experience. surfaces, images and shapes are used to bridge between high and low art, with a large dose of latent psychedelia.”
Mariposa by Terry Hoff opens at James Wright Gallery in Los Angeles on September 21. A collector preview begins at 6 PM and doors open to the public at 7 PM thru 9 PM. Thank you to Terry Hoff for the opportunity to share his story with all of you. This is an exhibition not to be missed.
