Taylor McKimens’ Vibrant Art Studio: Zines, Comics & Raw Creativity

Taylor McKimens, an American artist and sculptor, is renowned for his vibrant, comic-influenced paintings and installations. Taylor grew up in Winterhaven, California, a small town near the Mexican border, where its blue-collar population significantly shaped his artistic upbringing. His Southwest desert influences are unshakable in his form of folk interpretations in his contemporary art.

This video demonstrates Taylor’s love for bookmaking and visual storytelling in “Zines,” an earnest bookmaking method often made from photocopy machines, laser printers, and printed matter. Taylor shares multiple editions of his love for “zines,” comic art, photography, painting, and drawing. Taylor’s influences, including Gary Panter and Keith Haring, are also represented.

“Modest things like trash that people normally think are not beautiful,” along with a celebration of colors that seemingly vibrate in a complimentary way, illuminate the screen with artistic virtuosity.

In his Los Angeles art studio, McKimens surrounds himself with various eclectic items, including collected comics, books, vinyl records, artist monographs, and history of sketches, brilliantly rendered paintings, self-published books, and sculptural works. Taylor McKimens presents a creatively charged environment that allows for various project workspaces, a testament to the prolific work accomplished daily as he operates his commercial art studio.

Throughout his career, McKimens has held solo exhibitions at prestigious venues worldwide, such as the Wart’s Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Deitch Projects in New York, and Studio d’Arte Raffaelli in Trento. His work has also been featured in group exhibitions at institutions like the MACRO Museum in Rome and the Garage Md’Arteof Contemporary Art in Moscow.
