Join award-winning author and designer Mark Murphy on a historical adventure as he shares his findings about the Grapevine Canyon Petroglyphs on Spirit Mountain.
The Grapevine Canyon Petroglyphs are in Grapevine Canyon on Spirit Mountain in Nevada. In 1984, they were listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. For thousands of years, the Mojave Indians have called this sacred place their homeland.
Interestingly, it is unknown whether the Mojaves created rock art on Spirit Mountain or, as they call it, Avi-Kwame. Many historians reference Paleo-Indian and Desert Archaic ancestors. The site may have clues that connect through time with the Navajo Creation Story and the Hopi Mythology tradition.
The Navajo Creation Story, or Diné Bahane, describes the prehistoric emergence of the Navajo people. Many desert rocks illustrate generations of geometric shapes and symbols interwoven to celebrate the Sun and the Moon, Stars and Constellations, the Longhorn Sheep, Spider-Woman, and Shielded Warriors.
Mark Murphy observes the Spider-Woman panel and reveals clues that the site may have been a giant monument honoring the Longhorn Sheep, revered as a Guardian Spirit of strength, resilience, and power. He shares photos of an upside-down skull with what look to be horns carved into the rock hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago.
