The Great Bend of the Gila, located in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert and covering more than 375,000 acres, is a site of immense historical importance. The National Trust for Historic Preservation considers it one of the most significant cultural sites in the Southwest and reveres it as sacred native land.

Sears Point Petroglyphs

The Bureau of Land Management is the steward over this invaluable national monument once occupied by ancestral Hohokam and Patayan cultures, responsible for aqueducts, ball courts, petroglyphs, and geoglyphs along three major historic trails.

The volcanic basalt outcrops next to the Gila River contain hundreds of petroglyphs. The area is believed to have been utilized for thousands of years, especially from A.D. 500 until the 1800s. Many archaeological remains left by prehistoric peoples are visible, but petroglyphs are the most predominant.
